    Icing Concepts

In this training video, we describe the Icing concepts in ANSYS Fluent software. We provide you with a detailed and comprehensive tutorial to help you master all concepts of the Icing without any issues.

Whenever an object is flying in the free airflow, there is a possibility that supercooled droplets impinge on the object. This can cause a coating layer of ice to form on the flying object. This process is known as icing. Therefore, the icing analysis has application in flying vehicles, such as aircraft, UAVs, nacelles, probes, etc.

There are three main aspects of in-flight icing simulation. Therefore, corresponding to these aspects, three solvers are used for the calculations, respectively, including:

    • Airflow
    • Particles
    • Ice Accretion

For particles and ice simulations, we need to set the Fluent launcher at the Enterprise level and then open it with the Icing solver.

We used the particle solver for the simulation of particle impingement in order to provide the conditions for ice generation. For the particle solver, there are different types of particles, including:

    • Droplets
    • Ice Crystals
    • Vapor

We used the ice solver for the simulation of ice production and growth as the final icing process. For the ice solver, there are different physical models of the ice, including:

    • Glaze
    • Water Film
    • Rime
